Cleansing - Step by Step guide

You might be asking..

When is the best time to practice cleansing or what is the correct way to it.

Well, you're in luck.

Everyone has their own unique way of cleansing, do what feels right for you but to help you out

I have created an easy to follow step by step guide on how to cleanse along with some handy tips and ideas on when you should do it.

How to cleanse:

  • First you want to open your windows and doors before you start. After all, that negative energy and not to mention smoke needs to have a pathway to get out.

  • Start with simple intentions of clearing the negative energy out of your space and mind, focus on that intention.

  • Once you have your intentions in mind, light the White Sage stick or Palo Santo using a candle flame or match light and hold at a 45 degree angle pointing the tip down towards the flame.

  • Allow it to burn for about 30 seconds and then gently blow out the flame so you see orange embers on one end. The smoke should now rise up.

  • Slowly walk around your space with the smudging stick, allow the smoke to waft into the corners and ceilings of each room. Guide the smoke towards the open doors and windows so it can escape, taking the negative energy with it. Always take care, stay in the moment and be present. While remembering your intentions that your setting, you also want to be cautious. If you see any embers fall onto the ground or any bed linen put them out immediately! Never leave burning sage unattended for any reason

  • Once you’ve finished cleansing and removed the negative energy, you must push positive energy into the space to maintain balance. To do this, declare your intentions out loud or silently in your head. Once you have finished and you're ready to extinguish your sage or palo santo stick, press the burning tip firmly into your Abalone shell, some dirt, sand or a fireproof bowl until the smoke no longer rises.

Tips and Tricks

  • Be cautious and always stay present! If you see little embers fall on the ground, tamp them out immediately.

  • Never leave a burning stick unattended for any reason.

  • While you walk around your home cleansing each and every corner of each room, rest the cleansing stick in an abalone shell. You can use it to collect any ashes or embers as the stick burns. Abalone shells do have holes in them, take care and make sure the hot embers don’t fall through the holes onto flammable materials such as carpet or bed linen.

  • If the cleansing sticks have been resting in an Abalone shell or fireproof bowl for awhile, they may be hot, so use caution when handling it.

  • To cleanse a person wave the sage smoke around them while focusing on beautiful positive intentions and getting rid of any negative energies.

  • To cleanse a crystal or other object just pass it through the smoke, focusing on clearing away that stagnant negative energy.

  • To help direct the smoke to a particular area I like to use a feather to brush the smoke to make sure it gets in every nook and cranny possible. Using a feather helps to lift stagnant energy while cleansing. Quick short movements with a feather breaks up blocked stagnant energy. Long flowing movements smooth out energy creating a calm, balanced and harmonious flow.

  • Don't get it wet! Do not use water to extinguish the hot embers. Doing this will ruin the tip of the stick and will make it much harder to light next time.

  • Take care not to inhale too much of the smoke. While cleansing is a great way to clear your home from any unwanted stagnant negative energy, it is best not to inhale it directly.

  • From time to time you might see small bugs in your sage sticks, don’t panic. Put your sage stick in the freezer for 24 hours and the bugs will drop off your sage stick. Let it defrost before lighting again.

When is it a good time to cleanse?

Honestly, anytime you feel you need too . There’s no right or wrong time to cleanse, below are some ideas on when you may want to cleanse yourself and your home.

  • When the moon is at waxing crescent, this is a great time to set new intentions.

  • Before you go to bed after a long day around people, especially if you are in a busy customer focused job.

  • After you’ve had guests visit your home. Some people unknowingly bring in their own negative energies, it's a good idea to cleanse your space especially if you have had a lot of people visit.

  • After an argument with a friend or family member. We have all been there, that negative energy from an argument sucks and it can hang around for days and days. Cleansing yourself and your space while creating a positive intention will help recycle that energy into positive energy which will help you mentally and emotionally.

  • When you move into a new home.

  • When you start your own business.

  • After a life changing event like marriage, a career change, graduation, a break up or divorce, dramatic weight loss, a car accident, illness or a traumatic experience.

I hope this helps you on your personal cleanse journey.

Most importantly do what feels right to you.

Stay positive and always have good intentions in mind, until next time...
